Electronic invoicing (e-invoicing) is becoming the standard for business-to-business transactions in Germany. From 1 January 2027, companies will generally be required to exchange invoices in a legally recognised electronic format. The aim is to digitise business processes, simplify invoice processing and reduce the administrative burden.
What is an electronic invoice?
An e-invoice is more than just a PDF document. It is based on a structured, machine-readable data format that enables automatic processing in the recipient’s systems. This allows invoices to be processed more efficiently and helps to avoid breaks in the digital workflow.
Formats recognised in Germany include, for example, XML-based invoice formats and ZUGFeRD invoices, in which structured invoice data is embedded in a PDF document.
AEB Implementation
AEB is currently in the process of actively implementing the legal requirements for electronic invoicing. From autumn 2026, we will gradually switch to digital invoicing.
The preferred transmission method is the Peppol network. We use this to send invoices in a standardised XML format, enabling automated processing in the recipient systems.
If it is not possible to receive invoices via Peppol, we will provide them as a ZUGFeRD file via email instead. This format combines a human-readable PDF with the structured invoice data required for automated processing.
