Replacement of Internet Explorer and subsequent changes in AEB applications

AEB will no longer support the Internet Explorer (IE) as from 2022, following Microsoft's announcement of the end of support for Internet Explorer 11, which has been replaced by the new Edge browser.

With the developments in web technology, Internet Explorer no longer provides the user experience and capabilities required by AEB. We therefore recommend switching to an alternative, modern browser, such as Microsoft Edge (Chromium). This ensures that you will be able to access browser-based AEB applications after May 2022 and you will benefit from AEB’s enhancements that are already based on modern browsers today.

We would like to point out to you that problems that occur in connection with Internet Explorer will no longer be supported by AEB as of 2022. In addition, enhancements and further developments of our software will no longer support Internet Explorer starting in 2022.

You work with ASSIST4 in AEB's data center and display HTML content from other AEB products directly in ASSIST4

With October 2021 service pack status, ASSIST4 applications become independent of Internet Explorer (IE). The new Microsoft WebView2 control replaces the previous HTML Control in ASSIST4, which displays HTML content from other AEB products, such as Export Filing: ATLAS in the ASSIST4 application.
You can check whether you have set this display type in ASSIST4:

• In ASSIST4, open Tools – Settings – User.
• Under the Show entry, the Show eng. ext. box is not checked.
  

• Adjust the setting in ASSIST4

You make the switch from Internet Explorer on a user-specific basis. You can return to the default settings at any time to display browser-dependent content using the previous HTML control in ASSIST4.

Proceed as follows:

• In ASSIST4, open Tools – Settings – User.
• In the Browser Control entry, switch from Default to WebView.

• Required installations

Two requirements must be met before the switch. Involve your system administrator if necessary.

1. Your ASSIST4 application must have at least the August 2021 service pack status.

2. “WebView2” from Microsoft must have been installed in your Windows system.

To do this, open the download page for “WebView2” from Microsoft and download the WebView2 Runtime “Evergreen Bootstrapper”. You have to agree to the Microsoft Software License Terms. Please note that this is not an AEB software product.

The "Evergreen Bootstrapper" (WebView2) as well as the browser must be installed on the computer on which the ASSIST4 is started. I.e. if the user starts ASSIST4 directly on his client, the components must be installed on the client. If the user starts the ASSIST4 system on a terminal server (e.g. Citrix), the components must be installed on the terminal server.
On the application servers where ASSIST4 is installed and/or the GW services are running, WebView2 does not need to be installed.

• Adjust the setting in ASSIST4

You make the switch from Internet Explorer on a user-specific basis. You can return to the default settings at any time to display browser-dependent content using the previous HTML control in ASSIST4. However, you should make the switch by the time the May 2022 feature pack is imported at the latest.

Your system administrator (logged in as master) can change the settings in the Browser Control from Default to WebView for all users at once. Manual changes are required for users who have previously made changes here on their own.

Proceed as follows:

• In ASSIST4, open Tools – Settings – User.
• In the Browser Control entry, switch from Default to WebView.
  

If you cannot open the Settings, this is due to your user profile and the related rights.

Are you unsure if “WebView2” is already installed? For verification, set the setting to WebView. If this is not installed, you will receive a notice that WebView2 was not detected within the Windows system and you will receive the link to download it:

Your AEB Add-on for SAP® uses the integrated display of HTML interfaces in some places. Up to Release 7.60, SAP® GUI always used Internet Explorer for such so-called "HTML controls".

We recommend that you implement one of the following options to stop using Internet Explorer in connection with AEB applications.

You have the following two options:

1. Update of SAP® GUI and use of Microsoft Edge based on Chrome.
   The settings and updates required for this can be found under SAP® Note 2796898 and there in the section "Alternative browser control (Edge based on Chrome)"

   Configuration at the workplace:
   If necessary, the browser control must be switched to Edge in the SAP® GUI of each user under Options - Interaction design - Control settings under HTML control.
2. Activate the external display of AEB user interfaces.
   The AEB HTML interfaces can also always be opened in a separate browser window. To do this, start the AEB Cockpit (transaction /n/AEB/CP) and select the "Settings for Engine applications" entry in the Customizing sheet and enable the "Always use external browser" option there. This means that all AEB HTML interfaces are no longer displayed within the SAP® GUI, but instead they are opened externally in the default browser of the client.
