The CPT Incoterm stands for “Carriage Paid to”. This Incoterm is applicable to all transport modes. It is part of the group of dispatch clauses where the seller bears the costs for the main transport.
In case of “CPT, destination”, the seller delivers the goods upon handover to the first carrier and organizes, at its own expense but at the risk of the buyer, the transport of the goods to the agreed and also named destination (e.g. receiving port, airport, railroad station, customer's factory premises, or construction site). This clause is preferable to the CFR clause when transporting packaged goods or containerized goods.
- The buyer bears all transport risks of the entire transport route, starting from the handover to the first carrier. The goods are not insured by the seller. CPT is particularly suitable if the buyer has its own transport insurance.
- Remember that when calculating the statistical value, all costs of transportation after leaving the external EU border must be deducted from the value of the goods.
If the freight is to be insured by the seller, then the CIP clause is to be applied.
