What are Product Identifiers and why are they required?
Starting November 1, 2026, the European Commission will required Product Identifiers (PIDs) for all B2C distance sales imported into the European Union. This measure is intended to help customs authorities identify and prevent the entry of unsafe or non-compliant goods. A product identifier is a customs data code by which a product can be uniquely identified and consistently tracked across digital marketplaces, sellers, producers, warehouses, and customs processes.
PIDs must be provided in import declarations that meet all of the following criteria:
- B2C distance sales import
- Intrinsic value ≤ EUR 150
- National procedure codes F48, F49, or F53
- The new requirements do not apply to standard B2B import declarations.
Overview of Product Identifiers (PIDs)
| TARIC Code | Identifier | Description | Mandatory nature |
| C127 | M-PID | Merchant product identifier is a product identifier assigned by the online seller, marketplace or platform | Mandatory |
| C128 | NS-PID | The non-standardised manufacturer product identifier is assigned by a manufacturer, producer or product supplier and it doesn’t rely on internationally recognised standards | Mandatory |
| C129 | S-PID | The standardised manufacturer product identifier is assigned by a manufacturer, producer or product supplier and it relies on internationally recognised standards | Mandatory if it exists |
| Y081 | Declares that there is no S-PID for the product | Mandatory if there is no S-PID/C129 |
How are users of AEB's Customs Management affected?
If you are using Customs Management (Import Filing), you must get familiar with these new requirements and make sure to enter the data correctly to prevent your declaration from being rejected by customs.
The What's New in Customs Management document offers detailed guidance on how to declare the new Product Identifiers manually on your declaration, generate them with the help of dynamic value initialization, or transmit them via API.
You can find the document either on the AEB Documentation Center or directly in your Customs Management application via the Help menu (questionmark) or the "Help with your application" widget on the Desktop.
