Preparing the kernel update
To be considered before installation
Note the following points regarding the installation of a kernel update:
- With the current Java versions (OpenJDK 11.0.11 and higher), TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 are no longer supported. Therefore, make sure that the communication between your application and the database is set to TLS 1.2 or carry out the necessary steps internally.
- You will need more time for the installation (30 minutes extra).
- You will need more space on the installation drive (minimum 3 GB).
- You will need a 64-bit Windows operating system with a 64-bit AEB Engine.
- For multi-node systems, all nodes must be updated at the same time (as for service packs).
- Kernel updates are always intended for one product. If you need to update different products, several kernel updates are required.
- In case errors or problems occur, choose an installation time that is within the service & support hours of AEB Support.
- Before installing the kernel update create a backup of the AEB Engine’s installation directory and the database. This helps you get back up and running quickly in case any errors or problems occur.
Downloading the kernel update
You can download the update file as follows:
- Automatic download by “server update” batch: If there is an active batch of the “server update” batch type for downloading service packs and a service pack requires the kernel update, the necessary installation file will be downloaded automatically.
- Manual download of the kernel update via the interface: If a service pack is downloaded via the user interface and a kernel update is required, the application informs you that there is a problem with the service pack and that a kernel update is required. An additional button for uploading the kernel update will be available underneath the button for uploading/deleting the product service pack. The URL has already been preset in the following dialog. All you need to do is confirm the dialog.
- Manual download of the kernel update via the AEB service portal: If the server on which the AEB Engine is installed does not have access to the internet, you have to perform the download from the AEB service portal from a computer with internet access. In the AEB service portal, the kernel update is available for download in addition to the current service pack for your AEB Engine. Both files must be transferred to the “servicepacks_to_install” directory below the installation directory before you can start the installation.https://service.aeb.de/en/home/
Performing the kernel update
You have two options for the kernel update:
- Option 1: Installation via the user interface
- Option 2: Installation via the command line
- Installation via the user interface is preferable to installation via the command line since the process of the kernel update must be monitored manually when installing it via the command line.
Option 1: Installation via the user interface
You can always install the update via the user interface, independently of the download mode you selected. You install the kernel update exactly as you install a service pack. To start the installation, go to Office – Administration – System – Service packs and click Install.
Option 2: Installation via the command line
- First, check that no processes have been started which use files from the installation directory (e.g. running servers, explorer windows).
In the “servicepacks_to_install” directory that you find below the installation directory, run the <product name>.<product version>_kernel_<kernel version>.setup.exe (e.g. ComplianceProduct.4.0_kernel_4.3.setup.exe). The process runs in the background without user interface.
If you open the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del) and click More details, you can search for the EXE file on the Details sheet. This will show you that the update is running. If you cannot see the EXE anymore, the update has been completed.
- Installation via bin/install_servicepacks.cmd is not possible.
