On the night of 14-15 December 2025, there will be an EU-wide switch from the current Export Control System (ECS) to the Automated Export System (AES). This will involve several enhancements as detailed below:
-
Increased character allowance
512 characters will be permitted for goods descriptions and package markings, as well as for explanatory text relating to additional information. Company names, street names and house numbers, as well as references of supporting documents, previous documents, transport documents and other references, can be specified with up to 70 characters.
Postcodes can be specified with up to 17 characters. -
Number of documents and transport details expanded
99 documents, previous documents, transport documents and other references can be specified, either individually or collectively.
Similarly, up to 99 TARIC additional codes and UN dangerous goods numbers will be possible.
The maximum length of the identification number or name of means of transport will be increased from 27 to 35 characters, and up to 999 railway wagons may be specified as means of transport on departure. It will be mandatory to use only upper case letters for the identification of the transport means. -
Amounts and quantities
Monetary amounts, gross and net weights, and quantities will uniformly be given to 16 decimal places (with limitations in individual cases). This will have little impact in practice. -
Documents now on header level
It will be possible to report supporting documents and additional references as well as additional information at header level if they are applicable for the entire declaration. Transport documents are now only allowed at header level.
